Globetrotting Rockers Amyl and The Sniffers, Recognized Manufacturer Dom Dolla and Original Hip-Hop Supergroup 3% were all among the winners on Wednesday night (April 9) by American American Apparies Stone Australia Awards Australia Australia Australia.
The prizes were awarded at Ivy in Sydney and were hosted by the radio host and passionate Australian music lover Nic Kelly, with some of the country’s most prominent and honorable names in violation of this year’s event.
Amyl and Sniffers led the package and took two awards home at night. In the category Best LP/EP, their third studio album Cartoon Darkness Beat them like Rüfüs du Sol, Amy Shark, Missy Higgins and Nick Cave and the bad seeds, while their victory as best live action saw them victories over tones and I, Parkway Drive, Confidence Man and Dom Dolla.
While Dolla couldn’t physically attend the awards he did not go home empty. Despite three nominations, he only came victorious in a category where Rolling Stone Global Award saw him beating a talented selection of nominees, including Kylie Minogue, Empire of the Sun and Amyl and Sniffers.
“I’m definitely crushed, I can’t be there tonight to accept the global award, but very appropriate considering the title of the price I tour in America,” said Dolla, who will also overwrite Bonnaroo’s opening evening with Luke Combs in June. “Thank you so much for considering me and for the price!”
Meanwhile, original Australian artists also took two main categories at the event. For the best single, Gamilaraay Woman, Musician and Creator, Thelma Plum was recognized for his 2024 track “Frecles”, while best new artist was awarded 3%, a hip-hop super group consisting of Angus Field, Nooky and Dallas Woods. Their debut album, Kill the deadhad previously won the best hip-hop/rap release at the Aria Awards 2024.
For the reader’s election category, Keli Holiday (also known as Adam Hyde of the Aria Award -winning electronic duo Peking Duk) took the honor, with the hot -contested category that saw him wins over names such as Pond, Gut Health, Speed, Delta Goodrem and Crowned House, the recipient of 2024’s ‘Icon’ -Prize.
This year it was Icehouse who got ‘icon’ status, with frontman Iva Davies available to share an acceptance speech.
“Thank you very much, in fact a fantastic thanks to Rolling Stone, incredibly unexpected, I must say,” Davies said in a speech. “I want to name a person here tonight, co-founder of Flowers and Icehouse Bass Player, Keith Walsh. Also all the former members of the crew and a special cry for the man who put it all together, our production manager who has worked with us since 1986-HR Larry Ponting. Thanks for having us here.”
Icehouse was first formed in Sydney as flowers in 1977 and issued their debut album Icehouse In 1980, before adopting the name from then off. The record hit No. 4 in Australia and No. 82 on Billboard 200, while fifth album – 1987’s Man with colors -Hit top of Australian charts and topped on No. 43 on Billboard 200. This record also boasted some of the group’s biggest internationally successful singles, with “Electric Blue” and “Crazy”, which hit Nos. 7 and 14 on The Hot 100 respectively.
In 2006, the group was introduced in the Aria Hall of Fame, while 1982 single “Great Southern Land” has often been considered an unofficial national anthem by Australian music lovers.
“There was a time when there was a band that performed the rounds described as the highest earned unsigned action in the country, and they were called flowers,” said program manager Richard Wilkins when he introduced the award. “We couldn’t help ourselves, but fall in love with them, and all that changed when flowers became Icehouse and they continued to have massive hits all over the world. They are one of the biggest bands ever to get out of this great southern country.”
Rolling Stone Au/NZ ins published by vinyl media, part of the vinyl group. “Tonight was a fantastic celebration of Australian music and the remarkable artists this country produces,” said editor -in -chief Neil Griffiths.
“All of our nominees have done their bit to show the strength of Australian music on a global scene, and this was our opportunity to give something back.”
The fifth annual awards welcomed several new and recurring sponsors this year with headline partner American Apparel on board with Shure and JMC Academy.
