How to ask for the job
By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter
Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter explains how to ask for the job at the end of your interview.
“If you need a friend you need to get a dog.”
I am Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter, and today we have to talk about ending the interview and asking for the job. Now, asking for the job is one of the classic advice that recruiters offer and no one really explains how to ask for the job. You will never go into that situation by saying, give me the job.
I really want the job or something that could be interpreted that way. Instead of asking for the job is truly a euphemism to express interest. So I don’t think it’s appropriate at the end of the interview to say things like, I just. . . I would be a perfect fit for this job.
You know when to hire me or words about the effect or something that can be interpreted in the same way. Instead, you will express interest. So at the end, when they have the opportunity and they say to you, and this is the signal that they are packing up, then there is something else or there are other points you want to make or something that indicates the packaging for the interview.
I think the smoothest way to do it and it has to be smooth is just to say I just want you to know how interested I am in this role. Have I answered all your questions? Is there anything else you know to feel comfortable with me in this role? Is there anything that is unaddened that you might want to ask me? So in this way you have given them another cut by asking you questions and you have also expressed interest. And again when they say, no, I think I’ve gotten everything.
Great! What would the next step be in the hiring process and when can I expect to hear back from you somehow? Well, I expect us to end interviews in the first round of next week. We’ll get back to you right after that. As things stand now, how do I rank? Because again, I’m very interested.
Now it’s a very blunt question and it requires them to give you a candidate assessment. For me it is best that you know right then and there, but you do not necessarily have to be so blunt if you are not comfortable with it. You can simply say again and I will be clear, I am very interested in this role and I look forward to hearing from you about the next step in the process.
If I heard correctly and I know this is not, you know, thrown in stones because there are sometimes cancellations and re -planning, but I can expect to hear back from you at the end of next week. Yes. Fantastic! Thank you so much.
I look forward to meeting you again and other people on the team. Again, the idea is to express interest. I like the question of where I rank in the process because I would rather make you get honest feedback than the kind of BS where they don’t respond right away and it delays and it delays and you keep hope and sometimes make the mistake of freezing other interviews and waiting for one thing.
You continue out there and interview until you have the offer in your hand, otherwise you may be caught briefly. You may be misled by someone who doesn’t have the courage to be honest with you, and again, if they say to you, you did really well or that you rank very high, they still don’t commit to you, but at least you get good feedback that says you interviewed well. There may be reasons why they choose someone else that includes differences in compensation, personality and fit and a number of other things, but at least for now you get feedback that you interviewed well.
So again, for me, is the best way to ask for the job just to say you know I just want you to know how interested I am in this role. How would the next steps be? When would I expect to hear back? How do I rank among the other people that you have interviewed? So this is Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter. I hope you found this video useful.
