1. A high pressure interview. If questions are thrown at you as a machine gun fire, or they explain their expectations to you, and the results they want seem unreasonable, you go into a toxic environment.
2. If you look up at people on LinkedIn who have done the work you want to do at this company and you see how long they have worked there and notice that they do not remain long, it is probably a toxic environment.
3. A lack of transparency during the interview. Are they vague when they describe your role and responsibility? Note that the interview team looks at each other as if they are not sure how to answer? They should sell you on an option not trying to find out who will lie to you.
4. Excessive micro -management. This happens when your interviewer is too specific in what to do and how to do it. You do not feel to have any freedom to make your own decisions and problem solving.
5. They do not communicate with you about your work and progress. Leaders must provide high quality feedback, not eternal criticism. They must also be available to answer questions.
What should I do?
1. While trying to do world -class work, you can see if you can talk to your manager and, if necessary, HR about what can be done to create accommodation for you. You are welcome to say, “I cannot do it in that amount of time without sacrificing, I am unwilling to give with my family (school work, etc.).”
“Well, that’s what we expect from you.”
“I can’t do this at the time allotted. I was not heard of this schedule and if I had been heard I would have told you that it was not achievable by me for a 40-50 hour work week. “
2. Document what is going on that is toxic. It helps to have documentation of what happened. Toxic leaders and organizations are used to getting their way. You may need you to have a lawyer agreement with questions about resignation.
3. Develop an exit strategy. When you realize they are indispensable, start talking to people and activate your network. Apply for jobs and practice interviews. Spend some time with your therapist (if you have an established relationship with one), hire a job search coach and get advice on how to explain why you want to leave without sounding like a hazy employee.
