Do you have to apply for jobs you are underbaluated for?

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

People often hesitate to apply for positions where they do not meet 100% of the qualifications that fear immediate rejection. In many cases, however, companies prioritize potential, adaptability and soft skills rather than rigidly match every requirement. If you meet a majority of qualifications – especially core – and can demonstrate transferable skills, it’s worth using. Employers often use job descriptions as a wish list rather than an exact checklist, which means that there is often flexibility for the right candidate.

That said, it is important to distinguish between a stretching position and one that is completely out of reach. If a job requires advanced technical expertise, many years of industrial -specific experience or certifications you are missing, it may not be the best use of your time or theirs to use without a realistic plan to bridge these gaps. Instead, focus on roles where your abilities, experience and willingness to learn are adjusted in a way that makes sense to both you and the employer.

When applying for a role where you may not mark each field, a strong, tailor -made cover letter can help you get an interview. Use it to highlight how your experience masks what they are looking for, your enthusiasm, ability to learn quickly and examples of how you have successfully adapted to new challenges in the past without drawing attention to skills. Shows the initiative by mentioning any steps you take to Upskill – such as online courses or relevant projects – can also strengthen your application.

Networking can also play a role in overcoming experience holes. If you are interested in a role but feel a little under -qualified, you need to connect with people who work for the company and get involved in the company’s content. A personal connection or referral can sometimes carry more weight than a perfectly matched resume because it provides a layer of trust and credibility.

While self -confidence is key, it can be counterproductive to apply arbitrary to jobs far beyond your qualifications, leading to unnecessary rejection and wasted effort. Instead be strategic. Aim for roles where you can make a compelling case for your candidacy and continue to build your experience through learning opportunities, side projects or adjacent roles that position you for your dream job in the future.

In short, don’t count too quickly – but also be realistic about where your abilities and experience can really add value. Thoughtful to apply to stretch roles with a strong case for why you are a good fit can lead to exciting opportunities, but targeting positions that are in line with your abilities and growth potential will always be the most effective approach.
