Weeks after rumors spread that California experimental hip-hop-trio-death grips had shared, the band has now taken to social media to deny these claims.
Reports about the band’s first breakdown appeared in early February when an allegedly leaked message from producer Andy Morin appeared online, with the musician confirming, “Yes, it’s over” before he blames vocalist MC Ride (whose real name is Stefan Burnett).
“Stefan will do no more,” the message read. “But true, none of us can ever predict what will happen to the group.” At that time, no public declaration was issued by the notorious media-nest band.
However, Tuesday (April 8), the group went to their semi-active Instagram account to share their first post since October 2023, confirming that Death Grips is still very much a concern.
“Despite rumors and Høresay, we remain active as a death grip,” read a message signed by Burnett and drummer Zach Hill in the post, with the text written in the marker on top of a framed artwork. Remarkably, the statement Morin’s signature was missing, which potentially suggested that the group will continue as a duo in the future.
Death grabbed first formed in Sacramento, CA in 2010, with Burnett, Hill and Morin who share their debut -Ep Exmilitarian in April 2011. The group found wider fame thanks to the release of debut album The money shop The following year, with positive reviews that accompanied its performance in the top 20 of heatseeker -albums and rap album charts, and a ranking of No. 130 on Billboard 200.
After a handful of other releases, Death Grips announced their first breakdown in July 2014, claiming “We are now in our best, and then death is over” and withdraws from a planned tour that supports nine inch nails and soundgarden.
Despite this apparent collapse, the planned other half of their The forces that b Album followed in 2015, when the group returned to the live scene shortly after. Additional albums and EPs have since followed, although Death Grips has not appeared live since a performance at 2023’s Austin City Limits Festival, and have not announced further live shows.
