Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter explains how to edit an overly long resume.
Why workshops, courses and bootcamps do not work
And let’s talk today about cropping that resumes that is ridiculously long. Now I know in some areas, in some academic surroundings it is important to have a 10 -page resume.
In the industry, this is not the case. You want to get your resume for two, two and a half side in length. Why? No one is really interested in the things you did back in the Stone Age except to make sure you had a career progression.
So here’s what to do. Number one, look at the past 10 years. It is the area to emphasize.
And all before what you can summarize with the statement, past experience was like a filling of the empty with, and you can list two or three different companies from and you specify the dates. Let’s say. . . I just want to pick dates randomly. So this is 2014 when I record this, from 1996 to 2004.
So what you’re doing is to indicate what you did before 2004 with a quick summary. Let’s say your resume is three, four or more pages and it’s just the last 10 years. Well, number one, I have to ask you a blunt question.
Will anyone be interested in what you did nine years ago? Yes you did. But is there anyone who cares? Does it relate to the kind of position you go for now? Is there any experience or skills needed 10 years ago that is central to what you are going to today? Probably not. Now, if there is, you need to include it and just risk going to a long resume.
10 Fatal CV -Error that Kills Your Job Search
But I have to and will litly tell you, in many areas it is completely irrelevant that it is your ego that gets in the way. So you have to go in with a critical eye. You should basically ask yourself, okay, this is the kind of job I go for.
What is the background of people they are looking for? Should the keywords emerge from what I did 10 years ago and get people to call me anyway? Or is this relevant to what I’m doing now? If it’s irrelevant, get rid of it. Minimize it. Just as I mentioned before, you can do much shorter descriptions of your work from something in your extreme past than what you demonstrate today.
Most companies when they look at evaluating someone and determining whether they want to interview them or not look at just the last few years. The filler is the old things. And if you look at their behavior, remember that they are not reading a resume.
They look at screens on their computer screen. They do not print it to read it 95 times out of 100. What they are doing is reading it on a screen.
How many pages Downs do you think they are doing? Not much. So the most important work is the last few years. As you gradually get past it, it becomes less relevant.
Take a hatch to it. Cut it down. You have to do it because it can only hurt you in the end.
