Hard interview question: Why have you been out of work so long?

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

In some economic times being out of work can be a pretty common situation for a long time. If you act defensively by attacking the interviewer, “what you mean. I’ve been out of work for so long,” or words that the interviewer could translate to the effect you’ve lost. You can forget the job.

The way to answer the question is very subtle. You start by saying, “Well, I’ve always found that if I hurry into things without consideration, I’ll make mistakes. Thus, I consciously chose after I was dismissed to take some time to think about what I would do. After all, the economy has been complicated for quite a long time now. Businesses in my industry have gone through difficult times and I wouldn’t just hurry into something and find out that I made a mistake. So I took some time because I have always found that when I take the time to evaluate my opportunities and make a conscious choice, things turn out well. It took some time. I have decided at this time what I want to do, I am back in the market and the material in the job with your company … “You can schmooze the interviewer at this time.

The idea is to say, “I took some time at the point I was dismissed to consider what my options were because I wouldn’t just hurry back into something to have a job. My finances were in good order. I decided that the smartest thing to do was lean back and evaluate for a while before I hurried back. “

It will diffuse any concern that the interviewer has about whether you are “damaged items.” Or “What’s wrong with this person?” If the role, you know, thinking employers in that way when they think you’ve been out of work tomorrow, regardless of the economy.
