How do you answer “How much are you looking for?”

How do you answer “How much are you looking for?”

Interviewers want to lock your salary and expectations in the first conversation with you before you know anything about the job. This is how you answer.

In the video, I mentioned another video I have on how to answer this question after interviewing. This is the link

The lack of ingredient in your interviews (branding, resumption, network)

How to answer the question, ‘So how much are you looking for?’

Let’s start with the scenario. The scenario is that you are in your first interview, you are talking to a screener. Understand, screeners have only authority to say, no; They don’t have authority to actually hire you. So let’s give a suitable answer to them.

“You know I’ve only seen a job ad or a job description or what the recruiter told me. I haven’t met my future boss, haven’t met with the team don’t really have a Feeling the expectations people want for me in the role. Could we talk about it when I first have a little more information? ‘

Now it’s a true answer because you really don’t know what will be expected of you. And they try to lock you down on a number. So follow me further and understand they might come back to you and say, ‘But I need a number.’

And the right answer to it should be, ‘I can give you a number, but I want you to understand I’m not obliged to this number until I know more. So, first, let me start by asking you what is the salary area for the position? ‘Now they can come back with something translated into’ Well, I asked your first! ‘ As you can answer with, ‘yes, and I asked you the other. What difference does it make? ‘Then again, being playful here, with a smile on your face when you answer helps move the needle forward.

Now they may not be completely honest with the wage area. Let’s just pay attention to it. And as such, you have the ability to again say, ‘You know I will give you a number and I will be ready, I am not obliged to this number until I know more.’ And then when they first tell you their number, you can say ‘For now, the high end of the range is what I was looking for, and when I learn more about the position, I might come back and ask for more. I might come back and say I would be willing to do this for a little less. But it is within the ballpark of what I am looking for. Let’s talk after I actually have interviews with people. ‘

Now I have another interview about wage negotiations and I call this process ‘deferral and deflection.’ After postponement and deflection, I have a link to it in the Shownotes. How to answer the question when they get back to you looking for the number after the interview.
