Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter, and I’ve got the big gaming hunter hat on today and we have to do part five in the series on how to change career and this one is a bit atypical. So let me just start with a story for myself and say after a while, I began to realize how conditioned I had been to think in certain ways and do certain things like from the time I came into school as a little child until the time I educated, conditioned me to think in certain ways and do certain things. So the classic example is that you were brought to school as a child, be asked to hold a chain, do what you are told, otherwise you will not come into a good college.
You come into the college and eventually you get to shut up, do what you are told, otherwise you will not get a good job, and the habit that I let myself be conditioned on taking direction, do what I am told. What a surprise! I’ve been told since I was a little kid and didn’t think of myself in some ways about what would make me happy. Now I allowed myself to be pushed through the system and I got a lot of good things out of it.
I want to be clear, but my heart’s passion has really not been in the kind of work I have been doing for so many years and what I have been conditional on doing. So as part of this exercise that eventually led me to coaching, I started thinking, okay, let’s get crazy. Tell me some unrealistic things I might be trying to do, and that’s really what the homework task will be is to be unrealistic and note a few things for yourself that in no way shape or shape do you think you might be able to do.
Designing career experiments
Now this is part of a liberation process for you because the conditioning you have that you have received makes you think small and think in certain self -limiting ways, like when you first start thinking about it, you may actually be able to. It can take some practice. You don’t become an expert the first time you do.
It may be necessary to get training, but it is the kind of thing that when you were little, you thought this could be a way you could earn for life’s stay, but discovered that you were not a good enough pitcher to hit Yankees. Then don’t worry if it’s realistic. Think crazy.
Stay crazy. Write the kind of thing that if your friends heard about it, they can tease you, but they are true to you. Remember, that’s their thing, not yours and don’t let their opinions rule your life right now.
You are trying to find out what will excite you in your life and bring your passion into your career and that is the most important thing right now. So maybe it’s something you did when you were little. I had a friend who decided he would run a Scuba business in the Bahamas and he left his job and he ran off to run Scuba.
Maybe it’s your thing. So whatever it is, just write down three of them and I’ll come back tomorrow with something else, otherwise I’ll be back soon with something else having a nice day! Take care!
