There is a way to answer this seemingly crazy question. I offer 3 choices.
5 Fast Brainters
This 1 I learned from John Kador who has written a book called “Acing the Brainter Interview.” Apparently this is one that is asked about Microsoft. The question goes: “If you need to eliminate 1 of the 50 states, which one would you choose?” Then they ask you to get specific reasons why you chose the specific state you did.
I will start by saying that there is no real answer. There are lots of different ways you can approach this. The idea is to come up with a logical explanation that doesn’t make you sound like you want to be a assassin or mass murderer. For those of you in the South who hate the north or insult to people from a particular state whatever the reason, don’t start talking about how you would really enjoy seeing (I choose New York as an example). New York disappears from the map. Or California in seeing all these people die in an earthquake. Not really smart.
Think in the form of the style of how to answer gives you 3 ways you can. Again, credit to the book here.
John suggests building excitement by providing some logic 1. It is clear that this is Microsoft to skip the state of Washington. If you are interviewing for a job in New Jersey, don’t answer, “New Jersey isn’t really valuable.” Do not start over the state you are in and eliminate it. You will annoy some people.
Instead, he suggests discussing the logic behind the election and thinking out loud. Do not start with the name of the state, but build up some excitement by going in the interviewer through the logic and seeing where you end up. Humor, some tongue-in-kind markings, all work well.
He suggests, “I will not be responsible for eliminating actual people. I would remove the state’s political entity by giving it to Canada. Maybe a state that shares a border with them like North Dakota or Vermont. What I can still visit?” It will be answer number 1, which involves giving the state to Canada. You can do the same with Mexico. “Would anyone miss New Mexico? With the Mexicans are happy to have New Mexico as part of Mexico?” See where one works.
Another approach is to require elimination of property by combining it with 1 of its neighbors. Maybe Connecticut could annex Rhode Island. Nord and South Dakota could be combined to form the state of Dakota.
Eventually, “I would remove the state of Wyoming.” You talk about how Wyoming is the least populous state in the country and all this to be moved to a theme park on the Las Vegas Strip. It takes the tongue-in-kind approach.
Obviously, the first 2 is a little easier to work with and you may not be comfortable making the “wyoming dance.” Understand again that there is no wrong answer. You can sit opposite someone who presents is completely humorous and the idea is just to go through the logical choice. It will help you win the answer to that question.
