A week after they claimed Coachella censored the pro-Palestinian messages during their debut at the event, Northern Irish Hip-Hop Group Knecap ended their second festival dato with strong anti-Israel feelings.
The Belfast trio performed on the second weekend of the festival Friday (April 18) and closed their sets by projecting strong messages to support Palestinians. “Israel commits genocide against the Palestinian people,” the projected messages read. “It is activated by the US government that moves and fonder Israel despite their war crimes. F – K Israel; Free Palestina.”
Reportedly, Knecap’s first weekend performance on April 11 was also set to contain the messages, although their feelings did not appear. The absent messages were brought to the band’s attention after the word that their song celebrating former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s death in 2013 was not sent during the festival’s livestream.
“Not the only thing that was cut-wose announcements about the American supported genocide in Gaza somehow never appeared on screens either,” Knecap wrote about social’s in response to the incident. “Back next Friday Coachella, and it’s going to be sorted.” According to BlackThe Sonora tent’s performances were not sent for the second weekend of the festival.
Alongside the promised return of the messages, the trio also increased their feelings for the second weekend. While their pro-Palestine and anti-Israeli song remained, the group also used their latest performance to tell the audience “The Irish are no longer pursued under the British, but we were never bombed under the F-King sky with nowhere to go.”
This year’s edition of Coachella has not been missing with regard to artists who protested for Israel and share their support to Palestine. While Green Day has changed texts to reflect the situation of Palestinian children, names such as Bob Vylan and Blonde Redhead have also shown Palestinian flags under their sets. In the event of the latter, the onstage event was the soundtrack of sound from Mahmoud Khalil-the withheld Columbia University student, currently held in an immigration detention center after his role in protests on campus.
Knecap’s messages have generated the most notoriousness, but with many artists and fans who encourage Coachella organizers Goldenvoice and parent company AEG presents to comment on the situation. The Hollywood reporter Notes that insiders have claimed the Goldenvoice CEO Paul Tollett were “blindsid” by Knecap’s actions.
In a post that was shared on social media, CEO of Hybe America and former talent manager Scooter Braun – previously staged exhibitions in Los Angeles and Israel on October 7, 2023 -attacks in Israel – defended Tollett.
“This is my friend Paul Tollett, the founder of @Coachella,” Braun wrote. “He is someone who lives and breathes the festival community. He fights for artists and fights for all people. When I invited him to the opening of the Nova Music exhibition in Los Angeles, he was the first person from the industry to accept.
“He came to his own time and spent five hours in the exhibition and then met with survivors from Nova and invited them to the festival this year as his guest. He cried with them, he laughed with them and he continues to go in for them.
“Let’s not lose sight of who this man is, and let’s stand with him at this moment when a group without his knowledge took advantage of his festival and created hatred in a place full of love,” Braun added.
