If you’re #Over50 I’m sure you expect to run into #ageism in your #jobsearch. Here are 10 things you need to do to improve your odds.

How to avoid age forbaging in your job search

If you are over 50 you already know that you will run into age. That’s the way of the world. There are laws that prohibit it but try to prove it. Okay? So understanding that here are 10 things that you can do better to minimize the likelihood that you will run up against it. And I want to be ready I didn’t say eliminating it. But there is part of the fact that you can play that will improve the possibility of good results.

Then again, 10 things and number one when interviewing with someone, pay attention to your non-verbal messages. There are many first impressions on the camera or personally. And it’s not just what you say, but how you say things, what your eye contact is, like how your attitude is. If you are personal, a handshake, facial expression and manners. For example, the eye roll is not a really popular thing for hiring leaders. So as an over 50 job hunter, you have to show energy, confidence, enthusiasm, because the bias that exists is about lethargy, a “has been”, I will use all the disgusting expressions. But I might not use them, I just want to say, bad behavior that suggests you will be a pain in the back. And with that you need to pay attention to your look. And it’s your wardrobe, your hair, your jewelry, whatever in the lines that give people a reason to reject you.

Remains relevant

Number two is to become aware of what you are looking for. Ask yourself this question: What is most important to me in the next job or organization? What should I see or hear to believe that it will be a good choice for me? Make a list as long as you want. And then from there, narrow it down to the top 5. 1,2,3,4,5. Ask yourself for that, considering the fact that I am in an interview and they will also be on good behavior, what can I ask those who will allow me to trust that they can give me each of these five. . . or each of the first five items. You can change some of them over time, but focus on your top five.

Number three is aware of your attitude. When you carry yourself with confidence, you end up impressing people. There is a security in your way that allows them to trust you. Remember that when they hire competence, only one thing they look for. Self -confidence, character, chemistry with the people there, perhaps a little bit of charisma that everyone adds to those who want to trust you. I forgot to mention that they want you to come across as if you are interested in doing good job. If you ask questions about balance between work and life, you know, it’s just not modest to convey in the early rounds of interviews. You can talk to the staff and ask them questions.

“How is a typical day?” And that will give you your answer. But if you use a question like that that is a balance between working life and life, it basically says I will do minimally viable work.

Number four, get it clear about your message. What makes me particularly strong for this particular position. Compare your background and experience with the requirements of the role and what can I do to bring extra value if that’s what they are looking for.

Number five, when you market yourself, make sure you focus on your last 10 years, not the antiques in your background. And also make sure your resume, LinkedIn profile, any of your online profiles or personal sites use modern keyword languages that allow people to believe that you are competent in what they want you to be competent in. Follow?

Number six, talk about your strengths in a solid way. Talk. You know, again, it’s not just what you say but speak authoritatively because your materials, resume, LinkedIn profile, your network, they notice you in a certain way and you will present as a congruent with this brand. So the brand has to bond with the job description for the company you are interviewing with. Have stories ready to strengthen your abilities around this role. They connect you to the role and practice your speed and opinion before interviewing. It can be remote or personal. I think what happens, I’m very much on the camera, I’m doing a podcast I’ve had 2300 plus episodes from this recording. And I noticed that my statement is not as strong as it once was. So I try to be aware of it in situations where I present to groups and other situations. I’m not perfect. I am working on getting better.

Number eight, make a good use of your time. Answer to job ads? Are you talking to recruiters. Recruiters and job ads may fill up 25% of all positions. You also need to build connections with people you have also known in the past. People that they know who you don’t do who may help you that can lead you to the right options. If job ads and recruiters will fill 25% of all positions, how much time do you think you need to apply for job ads and find recruiters to help you find the job? Not as much as you are probably using. So when everything is said and done, redistribute your time.

Here’s another – “10 mistake older job hunters make (plus bonuses)”

Nine, organize yourself. Once you have follow -ups, set a reminder in your phone to when following up. Keep a list. Keep track of all your correspondence in a way related to the company, the interview, the job, but you will structure it is fine. As I use OneNote when I coordinate a number of things. I am a Windows user, you can use Evernote, but I structure my correspondence with reminders of follow-up what is taking place on previous calls. Do you know what I’m doing? I make pre -interviews for a podcast. What is the subject we need to cover? What is their background? Where should we start the interview, I make sure all this is organized for me. So when it’s time to actually make the podcast and video, you know it’s created. You must have a setup for yourself that tracks correspondence, follow -ups, everything you have been told so that you can monitor progress in this way. It does not require any particular tool, just one that you feel good about working with, that is one that is comfortable for you to work with and may be available on your laptop, iPad or on your phone.

Eventually, and this is a new one. If you only have one mobile phone, you may have a spam blocking on it. And unless a phone number is within your contact list, the call may not come through because the spam blocking will interpret it as a spam call. So you have two choices here. Number one, turn off the spam blocking during your job search. I’m not sure I’d do it. But you might want to do it. Number two is regular control messages. At least late in the morning and late afternoon, so you come back in contact with people in a reasonable way.
