I wrote this in January 2022 and thought I would re -publish it after Stetson Bennett’s performance in 2023 College Football Championship Game
SEE Sir Paul McCartney on Carpool Karoke When he visited his childhood home in Liverpool, where he and John Lennon wrote some of the early Beatles songs, brought back beautiful memories. And then, when he talked about how he wrote several of these songs based on childhood experiences, reminded me to notice the things that arise around me and the events that may seem transient. Still, many have the potential for more than just experiencing a moment.
Thus, I was sitting in front of the TV (or Telly, as Sir Paul would say) and began to watch an American football match between the universities of Georgia and Alabama for the College Football Championship and began to notice certain things about one of the players.
If you live outside the United States or are not an American college football fan, the name Stetson Fleming Bennett IV doesn’t mean anything to you, but I think his story may have sense to all of us.
Bennett IV grew up in a small town in Georgia and longed to play football for the University of Georgia. In high school he was a quarterback for a team that went to 3 consecutive state championship games, threw in more than 3000 yards, ran for more than 500 more and helped his team score more than 40 touchdowns.
His One Football Scholarship offer came from Middle Tennessee State, a school that was not a football power center. Others were interested until they discovered he was little (5’9 ″) and light (185 pounds) after football standards. Instead of being angry, he replied. “Well, you just have to show them sometimes.” “
Granted at school as a preferred walk-on, a more strongly recruited quarterback that spoke to him, saying that the country’s QB Gymnasium # 1 was not as good as Bennett IV. He had a chance but not much of one. He operated the scout team and shared a closet, indicating his low status on the team.
He transferred to a Junior School in Mississippi after watching the coach recruit another player, Justin Fields, to compete with the recurring starter, Jake Fromm. Later he was recruited to play at Louisiana University. Finally, a coach at the University of Georgia recruited him again and offered him a scholarship to come back. Bennett IV told him it should be different this time to return.
When he returned, he discovered that the coach continued to recruit others and gave them chances in front of him. It looked like he would be the odd man out again, especially after the new offensive coordinator said much to him in 2019. But this time he decided to continue working and be ready for when he was called.
Resilience, don’t worry
The two new quarterbacks were not able to. One chose out of the season due to Covid-19. The other was not medically cleared. Bennett IV competed with a beginner, but lost to him. You would think now that he would take a tip and give up his dream.
This year he was transferred again for the now healthy, medically cleared quarterback that was injured in the first game. Bennett IV led Georgia to a big win over their next opponent, 56-7, threwing for five touchdowns in the first half. Still, the following week, Georgia returned to the second quarterback until he was wounded again in the first half. Then they returned to Bennett IV and never changed.
Stetson Quarterbacked Georgia in the college football championship and with his team leading in a close game fumbled the ball (it was a dubious call), and the other team, Alabama, recovered and scored a touchdown a couple of theater pieces later and took the lead.
A diamond does not become a diamond without pressure. Bennett IV decided he would not be the reason his team lost.
Suddenly he threw more confidence and finished passports all over the field. First he threw for a long touchdown at 49 yards. Georgia took the lead. By the next possession he threw after another. Finally, the defense captured a passport and scored the last touchdown. He had the persistence and won a national championship.
There are many lessons we can learn from his history.
1. Talent is not enough. He had talent and showed it in every occasion he got. However, people have preconceived ideas about what they need or want. Sometimes you bend up to people with preconceived notions of what things should be like.
2. Go where you are wanted. You can’t get people to hire you or believe you. But sometimes they are right. You need more spices/experience. Go to a place where you can get it.
3. Follow the dream. Bennett IV returned to Georgia with a commitment he would have a chance. Get an obligation.
4. You may need to prove yourself. When it turned out, he didn’t have much of an option originally and needed to earn his chance many times. You may need that too.
5. He was preparing forthelessly for the first opportunity to prove oneself. Then, when he got it, he delivered again and again and again.
6. Bad things will happen. In the biggest game of his life, he made a critical mistake. Instead of whining or relentlessly criticizing himself, he decided not to be the reason his team lost. Bad things will happen. Resilience and your ability to jump back is important.
7. Winning teams and people find a way to win. It is important to learn from your mistakes, but winning teams and people dwell or do not believe their mistakes. Instead, they look ahead to find the way any way to win. Losing teams have good explanations of what happened.
Wherever you are in your professional or personal life, there are lessons derived from Paul McCarney, Stetson Fleming Bennett IV and his team’s victory. Whether you are a leader or a supporter, it is always important to review where you are, your current opportunity and correct course. There are steps to become a master, a price to be paid, and risks.
If you are not ready yet, what steps can you take today to move the needle forward every day? What details can you see that may go unnoticed that can have huge results for you and others.
Yes, there are lessons you want to see if you take a minute to notice.
