Tell me about a time when you made a productive change at a company that was useful.

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter. I am referred to as Big Game Hunter because I have been hunting managers and staff for organizations for more than 40 years. Here is one of the fun interview questions.

You know it’s a question designed for, not through the specific of the answer, but the explanation that follows makes you reveal things about yourself that you probably shouldn’t reveal. So here’s the question. What have you done professionally as you have been successful but are not an experience you will ever repeat? I love that question.

Now he has rare three possible ways of answering. First of all, the first way you can answer is by talking about a common task you should do. But you need to make sure you don’t describe it as being unsatisfactory and as if you’re all over.

You know you can think like a sports team. There are people in baseball who have to sacrifice themselves to move a runner over. Or you can talk about the time you swept the floor or stuffed envelopes.

And you know you understand the importance of the role. The place must remain clean. You know envelopes have to go out.

And you know you did well, but it’s not something that really makes your mind stay active. You’ve managed it. You put the best effort into it.

But at the end of the day it’s not something you enjoy doing. It’s a way of answering it. Another way is by talking about something that was hold -related.

You worked on this project with other people and you described your role on it. There were perhaps difficult personalities on it. Maybe there were people who just couldn’t see an eye to eye, and a lot of the team bumped heads with each other.

You sometimes tried to be a broker and work to get cooperation. But there were some personalities there that just didn’t want to cooperate. They just wanted to rule.

And you talk about your efforts. We got the thing going. You helped make it effective.

Some people were eradicated on the project. It was a tough experience, but you all pulled together. Almost all of you contracted and brought it home.

Third way of answering it, you did something that was really tough. You know you have to talk about what made it difficult. Maybe it was because it was poorly planned.

Maybe it was badly executed no matter what it was. Don’t talk about the blame. Talk about the difficulty of delivering what it was that everyone had committed to doing.

And maybe it was planning. You were not involved in it. But at the end of the day you did your part.

Others did theirs. Some people didn’t. It eventually came through.

It wasn’t necessarily on time. You know you get the idea. But the idea is to talk about something extremely hard, probably from a planning point of view, to be that failure is the easiest case to work with.

And then work from there to describe what made it so hard. I’m Jeff Altman. Hope you found this useful.
