The fact is that the staff don’t know anything and try to make sense of what is a scary situation. No one knows anything and everyone believes in something. As a result, everyone talks and many people try to interpret different eventualities and speculate on things they hear from each other that may have no basis in reality.
Absence is often increased when people get sick or try to get a head start on job hunting. Managers start approaching selected employees.
You’re not on the list.
It may be true today, but it may not be true in three weeks. One person I met several years ago was told she was not on the “list” of her boss who missed the meeting where she was added to it.
And he missed the meeting where he was also added to it.
You’re on the list.
It can be helpful to get pre-note. It’s like being told you can have a head start in a race. You will be fired with the next dismissal. Start looking now.
A woman I know with a bank has been told by her boss that she’s going to be in the next staff carriers. According to the banking policy, she already knows her severance package, so she spends time getting her resume ready and going out on interviews.

In the period before a acquisition, a young computer support person I knew at a financial company was contacted to stay on board until the acquisition closed. He performed a lot of work for a group that was extremely successful and also worked for a former chairman. If he stayed, he was told he would receive double salary until the deal closed and 9 months of resignation.
There was only one problem.
The acquiring company was not involved in the discussions and pulled their shoulders. The young man was invited to join the new company and was therefore not entitled to anything in the way of resignation.

After the initial shock, there is a feeling that feels almost like relief that occurs.

You can see, now you’re at home or working from Outplacement Office and trying to find work. Everyone asks you, “So how’s it going?” All you want to do is find a job and return to normal.
That’s because being laid off, fired, “exaggerated”, “rifd” is socially terrible.
No one throws a walking party for you and nothing is arranged for you to do. You are stranded on the island of Limbo and need to push against all the thoughts you have and others have about being dismissed.
