To find alumni on LinkedIn

By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter explains how to find and connect with alumni from your school on LinkedIn.

Interview Red Flags: We have this other job open

There is a little used tool on LinkedIn that I will bring your attention to. If you go to the network, there is a drop there number there, they will be more choices including “Find alumni.”

On Facebook, many of your early connections may have been people you went to school with. At LinkedIn we only tend to think about professional connections, but there are people you went to school with who can be very useful to you.

Once you come to the side of it, what you find are three categories: where they live, where they work and what they do. You can also specify when these alumni went to school. Standard for me was 1994-1998 (when I returned to Scholl and received my masters). If I want to, I quit people without dates. Obviously, you can make the newer or older as you see appropriate.

Think of people you went to school with or alumni from university, especially if you are younger, like a great resource. If you are younger, you can contact the elderly; If you are older, you might want to hire some of the younger ones.

Either way, don’t ignore alumni from some of the universities you participated in even if you didn’t study from there. These are people who know people who can help you find work.
