By Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter

Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter, explains what should go into any cover letter and how to format it, not just the original question and then I tackle on a bonus.

Returning to USA

Hello! I’m Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter. I got a question through Quora today, which I think will be very useful for many of you. This is how it goes.

I will read it all and then break it down into a few parts. The first part is what should be in a programmer’s cover letter. Now here is the most important part of it.

In general, I never need a cover letter when I apply for a job. My resume, side projects and work experience get me an interview with the same. However, there is this option that requires me to write a cover letter.

I have written one for non-programming roles. What should go into a cover letter for a programming role? Now, this is right from bats that you are applying for a job through a system or through a formal approach to the organization. So if you want to go this route and I want you to hear that phrase, if you want to go this route, get the cover letter to demonstrate your fit for the role.

Now you have clearly seen a job description. You know they want a cover letter. As a result, take this job description, break the requirements for the job, indicate them, whatever it is, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven on the left column.

For the right side, demonstrate how long and how recently you have worked with this requirement. Then go to the functionality that they will ask you to perform. List of the items you have actually done and how long and how recently you have performed them.

This makes the care obvious to the reader. And then from there, eventually, the way the cover letter would read is that I forward my resume to you because I understand that you are trying to fill a position for such and such. Then you start listing the items below.

I have taken the time to demonstrate how long and how recently I have worked with the requirements of the position and the functionality you have specified. I think you can see that this role fits well. Then you would put it out for them.

So from there, finally, I hope to hear from you soon, otherwise I will follow up with you within a few days to see if you are interested in meeting with me. What you have done is now to make the care obvious. If they are too mute to see it or they are too busy, yes, stupid you can do nothing about it.

You will not work there if they are so mute. Recorded is another matter. You follow up in a few days.

Using AI for Job Search

So that’s how I approached the cover letter. Now let me go to a wider question, why are you going through their application process? Why don’t you use LinkedIn to find the employment manager and then from there try to find. . . Try to connect to them and say I understand that you are trying to hire such and such. I will forward my resume to you and then, if you want, you can do that type of cover letter with him or she and forward it to them so they receive it, or if you know someone who works with the company, you need them to present you to the hiring manager so you can avoid this whole HR bureaucracy -part of the process.

So I’m Jeff Altman. Hope you found this useful. Come over to my website, Thebiggamehunter.us. There is much more there you can see, listen to or read to help you find work faster.

Then I will also encourage you if we are not connected to LinkedIn, send a connection request on LinkedIn.com tip Slash in Forward Slash Thebiggamehunter. The last thing I just want to say is, if you have questions about job hunting, you’re not alone. Most people do it, but ask the wrong people for advice.

Instead of what I encourage you to do is reach out to me through either presto experts or my website where you can find me there. Plan time with me. I will be very happy to answer your questions.

I’m Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter. Hope you have a nice day!
