Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter explains how to answer when your current manager asks for more than two weeks’ notice.
Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter and I will talk to you today about the cases where you are when you give your message and your current employer says, no, no, no, no, not two weeks’ notice. We need four, six, eight weeks’ notice, two months’ notice, two years’ notice, no matter what it is. It’s more than two weeks.
So here you respond to it. I want you to understand the reason why you do this is if you accept their unreasonable request that it is an unreasonable request. It has an impact on your relationship with your future employer and this is where you need to be in the next period of your life.
So you just answer simply by saying, I understand your concern and I want you to know that I am very prepared to do overtime to make this a smooth transition, but I have given a commitment to my future employer that I will be there on such and such as date. My obligations are important to me. It is also important to them and I will be there that day.
So if you need me if you need me to work overtime if you need me to join the interview or help with the handover to the next person, I can take phone call. Not a ridiculous number of phone calls, but I can take a phone call or two while I’m in the next place. Glad to answer the new person’s questions, but I have to be there on such and such date.
And if you work for a large company or a medium -sized company, you don’t have to worry about this next point, but sometimes when you work for a small company where the owner is very practical, they go, what? If you feel it that way, get out of here now. And they throw you out, in what case did they obviously not need you for more than two weeks, right? And if you want to start before on your next employer, you can contact them and say you know the person I worked for decided it would be better if I left now. I would like you to attend before.
Why did they feel like that? They had an emotional rage when I told it. . . I gave them two weeks’ notice and they asked for four and I said I will keep my commitment. So it strengthens an ethical quality in the next mind. . . In the mind of the next employer about you. And that’s a good thing.
