This is a question that is asked to perform job hunters by older professionals they are interviewing. There is a way to do this best. Here I discuss it.

One of my coaching clients was on an interview this past week and was asked this amazing question about their interview. I explain why I like it in a moment. The question is, “Who are your enemies?”
I train performing job hunters and along the way you will always rump heads with people. After all, not all Kumbaya is professional, right? There are people with whom you have discrepancies. What a company is looking for is the story and the structure behind it.
I will not go into this person’s story except to say by answering the question he made a little mistake. I just explained how to answer the question earlier.
When he answered the question, he talked about something that was 10 years in his past without stating it was 10 years in his past. It’s not the problem he disagreed. But for me he could have made a touch better by simply saying: “10 years ago I was far less experienced than I am now. I was in a situation where I … ”And that he would move on to the rest of the story.
In this particular case, he may have said: “We had a COO that was intercepted on phone calls, read people’s e emails, and that was problematic. In the end, there was a reason he did, but he never explained why. “” Miss “here was not to be aware that the episode was 10 years in the past, and then talking about the mistakes he made and how he made an enemy in the situation.
This will only be asked about the senior person. The person who interviewed him knew the company knew the board members involved in the news that is important that this question be opened because he would have found out anyway. That’s the reality of senior professionals.
It doesn’t matter where in the country you are, what industry you are in, people know people, and there is always a way to check the accuracy of what you tell them.
Part of your role as director of an organization is to have the self -awareness to admit that you make mistakes and talk about what you learned from the mistakes you make. No one expects perfection, and had you said, “You know I don’t think I’ve ever made an enemy in my career,” you would signal to them that you are an idiot.
You need to open up these things, but you have to put in a context from previous years. Frankly, that’s what most of us make our mistakes, right? We make more mistakes when we were a junior, a little more critical mistakes when we were less experienced, so we do now when we are senior professionals.
That’s the way to do it. You contextualize it by talking about something that you did many years ago and you say it was many years ago, so they actually know (for example, “10 years ago when I was less experience than I is now … “). Once you have set, the context is that being an older event tells them how you would have handled it differently now that you have more experience.
