Jeff Altman, Big Game Hunter discusses how to answer this difficult interview question.
It starts with courage
When they asked the question, they try to make it seem like you should tell them intimate details of your life that is completely inappropriate to talk about an interview. They act as if they want you to confess.
Playing on that there are two scenarios. The first is that if you were dismissed, you will not clearly say, “I was the least productive person in my organization, so it was easy for them to choose me.” Obviously, it’s not the right answer from your vantage point; From their ‘they respond by saying, “Okay. Many thanks.”
In this situation you are talking about an organization that fought financially and made overall cuts, and unfortunately, based on seniority, you are either (a) the least experienced person among your comrades or (b) one of the more expensive people in the department, and they decided that the quality of work was cursed, they could take a person out and save the money out of this department or three people and they chose for one. It’s an approach.
Again, if you were laid off because you were the most junior it’s easy. They took a seniority method. “I was the most junior person in the organization. It wasn’t a problem or my job because all my reviews were amazing. In the end they chose me.”
If you are in a situation where you were not dismissed where you had a choice this is a subtle.
When you listen to this, remember, I believe in shopping during an interview. Thus, you will act like you are annoying and going back in time to think about it. Then you say something in the direction of, “This wasn’t an easy decision for me. I had become frustrated because they saw me as someone who could run this department be very good as programming … Whatever it is … I wouldn’t sit in the same job for the next 20 years of my life. It really became clear to me that it would be the case where I was.
“So after talking to my manager and he was very aware that this was the plan for me, I decided that even though I liked my job, even though I like the work I did and liked people, I had to think of the longer term. I started going out on interviews and organizations saw me very different. They saw me as someone who had a huge upward.”
The second scenario is when you were released when you had a rough situation and decided to look at other options.
Using myself as an example at some point I left a company where I was a top athlete. I realized I didn’t get the support that I wanted or needed to do what I do. Management continued to reduce tools and I still reached my own pocket to pay for things. Eventually, I paused and asked myself, “If I keep doing it, why, if I pay for these things myself, why do I give the management such a large percentage? If I want to do it, why give the management as large a percentage of every sale as I do?” So I decided to hang up my own shingles. “
Did you notice what I made?
I painted a situation with the story so it is understandable from the audience’s point of view. I don’t act bitter in any way. I don’t speak hard; I just decided to explain it in a very direct way.
